On Friday, 22 August 2003 the removal van arrived at CapeSoft's office to make the big move! In terms of distance, it's only 1 km down the road, but in terms of size - the new offices are three times bigger than what we're used to. We've moved from open plan layout to everyone in their own office. The general feeling is one of "moving up a gear" - of increased productivity and happy slaves! <g>

Here's a couple of photos walking you through the process of our move - enjoy!

Bruce's two cents ...
  When we first started planning the space we had a big conflab over what people wanted. Most seemed happy with open-plan, but over time we got a vibe that individual offices seemed like a good idea. After working with the architect mulling over various options we decided to go with what we've now got. This breaks down as;

14 "small" ( approx 7 x 13 feet = 90 sq. ft)
4 "larger" (approx 10 x 13 ft = 130 sq ft.)
2 "large" (approx 15 x 13 ft = 195 sq ft.)
plus
boardroom ( approx 30 x 10 ft = 300 sq ft.)
electronics area ( An L shape about 330 sq. ft)

All of the offices, except 5 of the small ones, have windows either to outside, or inside (with line of sight to an outside window). all the offices have full glass frontage (as you see in the pics).

The large "open plan" area is designed for recreation etc. (Our sofa's arrive soon ). The "lounge" area leads into the open-plan kitchen, and also out onto 2 outside patios.

So the idea is that when you're working, the space is "small" - but not cramped (when was the last time you saw a 90 sq ft cubicle <g>). When it comes time to play there's also lots of open space where folks can get together, eat, relax and so on.

The board room offers a space where we can have meetings, training sessions, meet with clients and so on.

One interesting aspect is that we've worked hard to keep offices _away_ from the main outside windows. (The 2 large offices have outside windows, but the rest have windows onto an internal "atrium" or "lightwell".) By keeping folks away from the windows we don't have a problem of glare, and hence all the windows are uncovered, allowing for maximum natural light. The glass walls help to spread the light as well. Most mornings I don't even have to switch the lights on, there's sufficient natural light in the place.

The main problem with locating folks close to the windows is that it's usually too bright there for them, and so they (naturally) close blinds and so on, which affects folks situated _away_ from the windows. This was clearly happening at our old office, and since the effect was pointed out to me, I've noticed it at a number of different places.

Overall the office is now 4300 sq ft ( up from about 1600 ) so we're rattling around a bit <g>... One nice thing is that all the 4300 is usable space, the foyer area, bathrooms, patios and so on are not included in that.

We're up on the 4th floor, on the boundary between an industrial, and residential area. (Our side of the building is the residential side). So the view is pretty spectacular.

And just to make all you first world folks froth at the mouth, we're paying about US$ 0.31 a square foot.... Ahh it's rough out here in the colonies.... <bg>
