Introduction

This document describes the various flavors of the CapeSoft Email Server that may interest you as a software developer. (If you aren't a developer you can find out more information about the CapeSoft Email Server here)

Runs on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, Windows NT4, Windows ME, Windows 98 & Windows 95.

The 3 Flavors of CapeSoft Email Server

  1. The CapeSoft Email Server.

    • Description: A fully working Email Server including SMTP server (email sending) and POP3 server (email collecting).
(More details are available in the Email Server documentation).
    • Benefits: Unlimited users (mailboxes)
    • How it works: None, you can use this product however you like. Fully-functional.
    • Target Audience: home & business users, systems administrators, developers, in fact anyone who want to send and receive email.
    • Bundled as: Install file, which installs EXE application.
    • Price: See Clarionshop for pricing and to purchase Email Server.
  2. The Source Code for the CapeSoft Email Server.

    • Description: Full source code to the CapeSoft Email Server
    • Benefits: Clarion source code for a fully working SMTP and POP3 Server (including MX direct sending), which can be built straight into your application or as a standalone email server.
    • Benefits: Shows how to use CapeSoft accessories, provides a full source code Email Server, allows customisation and integration, and provides a very large amount of code that represents a significant amount of development time.
    • Benefits: Unlimited users (mailboxes)
    • How it works: Includes full source code for the Email Server.
    • Target Audience: Developers of Clarion, who may:
      • want to include email server functionality built into their applications
      • want to deploy many sites with email server and prefer this pricing structure
      • prefer to have the source code of applications they use, or just find CapeSoft's products irresistible
    • Bundled as: Source Code. Developers also receive documentation about the Secwin licensing and source code to a registration program to generate license codes.
    • Requirements: Clarion 6 (6.3 9055 recommended).
    • Price: $499 once off. This includes a license for one copy of CapeSoft Email Server that can be installed on a single machine. Thereafter there is a royalty fee per copy of EXE that uses the source. (i.e. this applies to both in-house use and applications that are sold or distributed, each copy that is installed on a machine needs a license)
  3. The Developer Edition of the CapeSoft Email Server.
    • Description: Almost the exact same application as the Normal CapeSoft Email Server, but it has an additional sending and receiving authentication layer. This basically means only your applications will be able to talk to the server. The server will send outgoing email, and can collect emails.
    • Benefits: A royalty free email server for you to distribute with your application.
    • Benefits: Ideal for existing NetTalk users who want to send emails from their applications.
    • Benefits: (for sites where your client uses dial-up). You don't need to code direct (MX) email sending or dial-up scheduling into your application. You application just talks to the email server Developer Edition and it does the hard work. This will save you time, and allows you to achieve more with regard to developing applications that will fulfill your client's needs.
    • Benefits: Your application does not have to be online to send emails. Your app just sends its emails to the Developer Edition and it will take care of the rest. So even if you application runs for 5 minutes at midnight every night, you can rest assured that the emails it produces can be delivered.
    • Benefits: (for sites where your client uses dial-up). The combination of your application with the Developer Edition can be used to send emails, independently of your client's ISP. You don't even have to know your client's ISP SMTP details.
    • Benefits: (for sites where your clients has a permanent connection or already has existing in house email servers). Your application can send emails either through the Developer Edition or through your clients in house email servers. Your application and the Developer Edition are separate apps. In some installations you may choose to use them together, at other site, you may just want to run your application on its own.
    • Benefits: (for sites where your clients has a permanent connection or already has existing in house email servers). Your software can now be independent of your client's in house email servers. This may help in a number of situations:
      a) Finding the administrator can take some time in a large organization
      b) Large company politics involved in organizing more mailboxes for your application
      c) When one of their administrators moves/changes their email server, boom, your application appears to fail.
    • Benefits: You can chain Developer Editions together. For example you can run one at each branch of company, and your application can sync data between branches. See CapeSoft Replicate if you are looking for more information about data replication.
    • Benefits: Unlimited users (mailboxes)
    • How it works: Allows emails to be sent/received from your application to the Developer Edition Email Server. (Because it's royalty free Email clients that you haven't written (e.g. Outlook/Outlook Express) won't be able to talk to the Developer Edition except to collect error emails - if you are wanting this functionality, then it's best to install the normal CapeSoft Email Server or get hold of the source code).
    • Target Audience: Developers of almost any language including: C/C++/C#, Clarion, Delphi, Java, PHP, Visual Basic (etc.) who want to send or receive emails from their application and are looking for a royalty free solution. Ideal for CapeSoft NetTalk users who want to send emails from their applications.
    • Bundled as: Install file, which installs the Developer Edition EXE application. Developers also receive documentation about the authentication that would need to be added to your applications.
    • Price: $399 once off. No royalty fee - i.e. Each developer buys a license and then they can ship the Developer Edition with their product.

Some developers will prefer the Developer Edition, others will prefer the source, others have decided that $177 for the CapeSoft Email Server Business Edition per site is still a small fraction of what they will be charging the client. We hope you find a winning solution too. If you can think of another solution that will help you more, please send us an email ( ), we'd be glad to hear from you.

Source Code
In addition to the CapeSoft Email Server copyright & license (left) the Source Code ships under the following license agreement:

You need to purchase one license of the source code per developer (i.e. $499 per developer). For each copy of an application that you distribute, which uses the CapeSoft Email Server source code in full or part, you need to pay a royalty fee to CapeSoft. Please contact CapeSoft should you require further information.

Developer Edition
In addition to the CapeSoft Email Server copyright & license (left) the CapeSoft Email Server Developer Edition ships under the following license agreement:

You need to purchase one license of the Developer Edition per developer (i.e. $399 per developer). You may then distribute this Developer Edition royalty free. The emphasis is that you (or a de facto distributor) are distributing the application. In other words it is meant to be bundled with your software, for use with your software. You can't give the Developer Edition to other programmers for their applications - they need to purchase a license from us. The Developer Edition exists so that you can distribute a royalty free email server solution for your application. The Developer Edition Email Server is meant to be receiving emails from your application(s) only.

You may not distribute the Developer Edition in a manner that allows it to be used as a general email server solution for all emails. e.g. User's should not be sending emails from Outlook (or Outlook Express) to the Developer Edition. Should this be the nature of your application/solution, then royalty fee (as described in the source code license above) would apply. Note that the royalty will be charged as per copy of the Developer Edition that is distributed. We have created this version to try and help programmers, and the idea is not to by-pass the need for clients to have to install emails servers, rather it would allow your application to send emails via the Developer Edition as if an full email server system was in place.
