"It's a Mail Thing"

CapeSoft FeMail is a fully featured Email client, which is fast, simple to use, and provides both standalone installs, as well as allowing mail to be shared on a LAN. It also supports a number of different backends for storing mail and data. FeMail is also available in a source code version to allow you to easily add a full mail client to your application, and fully control the data stored by the mail client using the backend of your choice.

The Screenshots section shows some of the window and features that feMail provides and serves as a good introduction to feMail.

feMail is currently Beta - which means that is it is an initial release and doesn't have every single feature, bell, and whistle that it will end up with. While in Beta form this documentation is not complete, new documentation for both users and programmers will be released each version. Please check the History section for the latest fixed, changed and features.

For programmers feMail is also available as source code, see the Source section for more information.

Exciting New Features

Each new release of FeMail not only fixes various issues, but also introduces great new features. In the last three releases some of the exiting new features are:

  • White List filtering for incoming mail. When this in enabled (from Tools->Options->Spam and Filtering) all incoming mail will be checked, and if the sender is not in the Address Book then it is moved or deleted, dependant on the selected option.
  • Image Blocking. By default all images are blocked until the user clicks the warning in the Info Bar to display the images. Unlike other mail clients FeMail blocks all images, regardless of whether they are linked to an image on a web server, or embedded in the mail message. Once the user has allowed images to be displayed for a message, it is marked as trusted, and images will then always be displayed for that specific mail message (you do not need to click the prompt every time you come back to a mail message that you have already allowed image display for). Image blocking can be turned off in the Options: Tools->Options->Read and Compose->Read Mail->Don't Block Images.
  • A completely new HTML editor for mail, this is a major new feature and completely changes the way that FeMail works.
  • Compatible with all version of Windows, including Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 and provides improved stability and performance.
  • XHTML 1.0 support (generates clean, standard compliant XHTML code, compatible will all the major browsers)
  • Font and text formatting: type, size, color, style, bold, italic, alignment, indentation, bullets list, etc
  • CSS (cascading style sheets) support for a better integration with web sites, and cleaner, faster, small code with better consistency
  • What You See Really Is What You Get. Pages are rendered by IE as you edit them, so the rendering is very accurate.
  • Cut, Paste and Past as Plain Text, Undo and Redo, paste from MS Word cleanup with auto detection
  • Link creation, anchors support, image insertion, table creation and editing (add, delete rows, etc) - one of the best systems in the market, table cells editing (size, colours, etc)
  • Form fields, right click context menus support
  • Spell checker integration via SpellerPages and ieSpell (additional built-in spell checking options coming soon!)
  • Multi-language support, including Right to Left scripting.
  • Complete page editing, including visually setting the overall page properties
  • For Programmers using the Source version:
  • Save to memory or disk , full access to the editor and editor data programmatically,
  • Easily customisable, fully skin-able, and can be modified without requiring a recompile of the application, easy menu customization and skins (add your own styles, font-formats, etc ...)
  • Plug-in support, easily customisable toolbars, including runtime customisation and additions (no recompile required).
  • Ability to get and set the text or HTML simply by calling a method, Full access to the DOM of the edited page coming soon!
  • Built in spell checking for HTML messages. Note that this currently uses IESpell, which the application will prompt the user to download and install if it is not installed. This is free for non commercial use. A fully integrated spell checker without any external dependencies will be available in the next release.
  • Basic header and footers to print outs with the To, From, Send/Received Date and Page Number.
  • Client/server installs, new install options allow a client and server install so that multiple copies of FeMail can share the same data across a network, allowing for shared mail without requiring a dedicated server.
  • Fast Mail Search functionality to allow all messages to be search. This uses fuzzy matching to allow words, or parts of words to be matched etc. Does a full text search, including allowing the body to be searched.
  • Outlook mail import.

See  the History section for a complete list of the fixes and changes in each release.

So What Does Beta Mean Anyway?

Currently feMail is Beta software, this means that it is not feature complete for the current version, and that it is still a work in progress. That said it is tested and Beta does not mean that it is non functional in any way. If you come across any bugs or glaring omissions then please contact us so that we can rectify them!

This documentation is very much a work in progress, as the Beta progresses each section will be completed and additional documentation will be added. We are aware that not all of the Help pages are complete!

Windows Vista Compatibility

FeMail is fully Windows Vista compatible, and stores data according the specification provided in the Microsoft Windows Logo Program requirements. However in Windows Vista the HTML editor used by FileExplorer is not included in Vista itself. This causes the HTML editor to not be displayed. This same issue affects a wide variety of software, such as Microsoft's own Office 2003. Microsoft have released a small, free download to correct this issue, available from the Microsoft Download Site. We are currently working on a vastly improved HTML editor that will also remove this dependency.
